Module Title: Mastering the ADDIE Model for Novice Instructional Designers
Module Goals:
- Understand and apply the ADDIE model systematically.
- Utilize practical tools and templates to enhance instructional design projects.
- Reflect and iterate to improve learning outcomes in real-world settings.
What is ADDIE?
ADDIE is one of the instructional design models that prescribes the generic, systematic, dynamic, and flexible instructional design process, which is widely used in instructional design for effective learning (Holden, 2015).
What is the Analysis Phase in ADDIE?
Analysis is the systematic effort taken to gather opinions, ideas, and data from a variety of sources on an observed performance problem.
The Analysis phase is the “Goal-Setting Stage,” where the focus is on understanding the target audience. Designers assess students’ existing skills and knowledge to avoid repetition and ensure the course addresses areas they still need to learn. This phase identifies what students already know and what they should achieve by the end of the course.
Analysis foci are
• Defining the performance problem
• Identifying characteristics of learners
• Identifying characteristics of work and learning environments • Decomposing content for the performance
Practical Tools & Templates:
1. Learner Analysis Questionnaire:
- Age, education, and background.
- Current skill level.
- Learning preferences.
2. Needs Analysis Worksheet:
- Problem Statement: What issue is the training addressing?
- Objectives: What should learners be able to do after the training?
- Constraints: Budget, time, resources.
Example:
Scenario: A company needs customer service training.
- Problem: Inconsistent handling of complaints.
- Audience: Customer service staff aged 25–40 with no formal training.
- Constraint: 2-hour session during work hours.
Reflection Prompt:
- What data do I still need to understand my learners and constraints?
