Module Title: Mastering the ADDIE Model for Novice Instructional Designers

Module Goals:

  1.  Understand and apply the ADDIE model systematically.
  2. Utilize practical tools and templates to enhance instructional design projects.
  3. Reflect and iterate to improve learning outcomes in real-world settings.

What is the Design Phase in ADDIE?

Design is the systematic effort to gather opinions, ideas, and data from various sources about observed performance problems.

The Design phase involves setting clear goals, choosing tools to measure performance, and planning resources. This stage focuses on defining learning objectives, organizing content, creating lesson plans, developing exercises and assessments, and selecting appropriate media to support learning.

Design foci are
• Determining the instructional goals
• Determining learning objectives
• Identifying learning assessments
• Choosing instructional strategies and Media
• Assuring congruency among goals, objectives, assessments, strategies, and media

Practical Tools & Templates:

1. Learning Objective Template:

    • Use the ABCD Model (Audience, Behavior, Condition, Degree):
      • Example: “Given a set of customer inquiries (Condition), customer service staff (Audience) will respond appropriately (Behavior) with 95% accuracy (Degree).”

2. Storyboard Template:

    • Outline each slide or video scene with:
      • Visual elements.
      • Narration or text.
      • Activities or interactions.

Example:

For customer service training:

  • Objective: Staff will demonstrate the 5-step complaint resolution process with 90% success.
  • Storyboard: Slide 1: “What is Complaint Resolution?” (Image + voiceover).

Reflection Prompt:

  • Do my objectives align with the learner’s needs and the desired outcomes?
